Day 15 - Castres to Carcasonne

Quite a short ride today of 43 miles (70km) arriving at 2pm. Made up of three distinct parts. The first third was flat prior to a coffee break at Mazamet. Then an 800m climb to the top of the Black Mountains through Cathar country, which took 1.5 hours. We ate a slice of pizza on top and cake, and had to put fleeces on as it was cold. Then finally a long fast descent into Carcasonne, with an amazing view of the Pyrenees behind the city.

We again mostly avoided rain, as the skies had looked menacing. We just had to cope with strong headwinds after the descent.

We walked into the old city in the afternoon, but whilst beautiful, the tourist crowds were a bit much for us after two weeks of rural France and we quickly left.

Found a nice little restaurant and spent the evening chatting to an interesting retired couple from the Cotswolds. Bed by 10.
